7 Types of Glass Used in Building Facades in India

7 Types of Glass Used in Building Facades in India

Why Glass Selection Determines Your Building's Future

The glass you choose affects energy bills for the next 25 years, whether your facade looks dated in a decade, and potentially whether your occupants are safe. In India's climate — humid Mumbai coastline, hot Pune summers, Delhi winters — the right glass can cut AC costs by 35%. The wrong glass is a permanent mistake you'll pay for every month.

    1. Toughened (Tempered) Glass — The Non-Negotiable Baseline

Toughened glass is 4-5x stronger than standard float glass. When it breaks, it shatters into small, blunt cubes — not sharp shards. This is a legal requirement for facades in India, not an option. Available in 6mm to 19mm. Cost: ₹120-280/sq ft. Important: toughened glass cannot be cut after tempering — lock in sizes before ordering.

    2. Laminated Safety Glass — When Shattering Isn't Enough

Two glass layers bonded with a PVB or SGP interlayer. If it breaks, the glass stays in the frame — critical for overhead glazing, staircases, skylights, and any glass above head height. It also blocks 99% of UV rays and provides meaningful sound dampening. Cost: ₹200-450/sq ft. Mandatory for any glass where gravity becomes a hazard after breakage.

    3. Double Glazed Unit (DGU) — The Energy Decision

Two panes separated by an air or argon gas gap (typically 12mm). DGU reduces heat transfer by 50-60% versus single glazing. In a typical Pune office, this translates to 25-35% lower AC electricity costs. Required for LEED/IGBC green building certification. Payback period: 4-6 years. Cost: ₹350-600/sq ft. For any air-conditioned building, DGU is not a luxury — it's a financial decision.

    4. Low-E (Low Emissivity) Glass — The Smart Upgrade

A microscopically thin metallic coating that reflects heat while transmitting visible light. Reduces Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) by 40-60% compared to clear glass. Most effective on west-facing facades where afternoon sun is brutal. In our projects, buildings with Low-E DGU achieve indoor temperatures 3-5°C lower, significantly reducing AC load. Cost: ₹280-500/sq ft.

    5. Reflective Glass — The Iconic Look With Trade-offs

Metallic oxide coating gives a mirror appearance from outside while maintaining interior visibility. Reduces glare by 60-70%. The trade-off: VLT is often below 25%, which kills natural daylight and LEED daylight credits. Also creates light pollution for neighbours. Cost: ₹180-350/sq ft. Use as an accent, not as the primary glass for an entire tower.

    6. Frosted / Acid-Etched Glass — Privacy Without Darkness

One surface treated for a translucent matte finish. Provides privacy while allowing diffused natural light — ideal for bathroom facades, conference room partitions, and stairwell enclosures. Note: frosted finishes show fingerprints and water marks easily on interior-facing surfaces. Cost: ₹150-300/sq ft.

    7. Smart Switchable Glass (PDLC) — The Premium Option

Glass that switches from clear to opaque at the flip of a switch using Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal technology. Eliminates the need for blinds in conference rooms. In frosted state, transmits about 60% of light while providing complete privacy. Increasingly specified in hospitals, premium offices, and luxury residences. Cost: ₹1,500-3,500/sq ft.

    Which Glass Should You Choose?

For most commercial buildings in Pune and Mumbai, we recommend DGU with Low-E coating on east, west, and south facades. North facades can use standard DGU clear. For residential balconies, toughened laminated glass is the safety-first choice. Don't let anyone talk you into single clear glass for an air-conditioned space. Contact Fine Glaze for a glass specification tailored to your building's orientation and budget.
